Green tea is well-known to benefit the human body most especially as green tea for weight loss. It started in ancient times when Chinese green tea was popularized because of its positive effect to the human body. Nowadays it is also used not only in China but also in Japan and worldwide.
More antioxidants in green tea
What makes green tea better than other tea? It actually comes from the same tea plant Camellia sinensis where oolong and black tea are also derived. However, even if they all come from the same source, green tea has more antioxidant content and less caffeine than the others, and they are processed differently producing a different taste and aroma. Its leaves are steamed and dried to prevent from oxidizing. This method retains more healthful antioxidants present in the green tea. Oolong and black tea leaves on the other hand, use oxidation and then dried.
Many researches on the benefits of green tea point to helpful compounds called antioxidants which primarily contribute in keeping a person’s well-being. Antioxidants fight free radicals that can cause cell damage. When cells and DNA are damaged, free radicals can speed up aging, and lead to health problems like cancer, hypertension, and other serious disorders. Green tea, compared to other teas and coffee, contains the highest antioxidant called polyphenols which neutralize free radicals or reduce its damaging effects to the body.
EGCG increases metabolism for weight loss
The most important discovery about green tea benefits is related to green tea for weight loss. Due to the thermogenic properties, green tea helps in the weight-loss process. Two substances called epigallocatechin (EGCG) react to produce a higher thermogenic level. This means that the body has increased metabolic rate and enables the body to burn fats and calories faster. Because EGCG stimulates the body to metabolize faster, it is preferred by many people with weight problems. Because of the diuretic ability of green tea, some water weight can also be flushed out by the body when drinking green tea for weight loss.
