Effects of green tea caffeine on pregnancy
Although it is safe to drink a limit of 3 cups of green tea, many recent researches have noted the following findings why pregnant women should avoid drinking green tea:
- Green tea, like coffee, has caffeine. Caffeine is not good for pregnant women. It is a stimulant resulting to an increased blood pressure and heart rate. It is also a diuretic which causes frequent urination and may lead to dehydration.
- Caffeine can be normally alright for pregnant women but maybe too much for the fetus. Studies in animals revealed that caffeine caused birth defects, preterm delivery, reduced fertility and risk of low-birth weight off springs and other problems. Although not conclusive among human beings, it is still best to be cautious.
- Green tea caffeine also increases risk of miscarriages. A study published in American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology revealed that more than 200 mg of caffeine consumption among pregnant women can double the risk of miscarriages than those who do not drink any caffeine.
- Green tea prevents folate metabolism. The catechin polyphenols, specifically epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), react with the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase and cause low serum folate levels during pregnancy. Folate recommendation for pregnant women is 440 microgram/day and twice as high than those who aren’t. Folic acid deficiency can cause serious neural tube defect called spina bifida.
It is absolutely true that green tea antioxidants offer many health benefits. Drinking green tea is a good way to prevent cell damage that usually causes cancer, hypertension and cardiac disorders. It is also good for preventing tooth decay, strengthening the bone and increasing the ability of the body to ward off bacteria and viruses. However, if you are pregnant it is wise to limit drinking green tea.
